You did it. You graduated, nailed the interview and landed your first real job. It’s been a long road to get to this point, but you’re so thrilled to begin this new chapter in your life. As exciting as starting a new job can be, it also tends to be a pretty nerve-racking experience. The night before, you’ll have a million thoughts running through your head. “I hope they like me.” “What if I embarrass myself?” “Will I make any friends?” “What if I say the wrong thing?”
First impressions are everything, so it’s crucial that you start off on the right foot with your new employer and coworkers. There are definitely things to remember to do for your first day (we covered that here, as well as some major “no-nos.” Let us help you navigate those first-day waters with the four first-day faux pas.
1 | Cut the trash talk
Whether it’s about your former employer or your last roommate, your new employer does not want to hear you complaining on your first day. Gossip falls in this category as well. You do not want to get the reputation as someone who spreads rumors from the get-go. There is nothing about gossip and drama that really screams“ promotion,” so unless your new gig is at TMZ, it’s best to keep your head down and stay busy if these situations arise.
2 | Don’t be caught underdressed (or overdressed)
This can be a fine line in many of today’s workplaces. Business casual and just flat-out casual wear are becoming mainstream, so it can be tricky to decipher that dress code before starting your first day. Even if you know it’s a casual environment, step it up on your first day to be safe. Absolutely no jeans. We would also recommend staying away from skirts on the first day — you don’t know what your work space will look like, so you don’t want to be caught in an awkward situation. Also, keep the heels at home, or at least pack a pair of comfortable (and cute) flats — no one wants blisters after a tour of the building.
3 | Don’t take your phone out
he last thing your new boss is going to want to see is you glued to your phone all day (unless you work in social media ;)!). Show that you’re focused by turning your iPhone to silent and zipping it away. We like to tuck ours away in the Quilted Small Ella Tote — it’s so chic for the workplace! Tip: Remember to wear a watch! Without your phone to check the time, it will come in handy for your meetings.
4 | Don’t be caught off guard
The Girl Scouts always taught you to be prepared and starting your new job is no different. Leave your expectations at the door and come prepared for any situation. Pack a lunch in case your team doesn’t take you out to eat (hold the garlic, onion and tuna for another day). Bring a water bottle and travel mug with your own coffee — some work places might not have it readily available. Although some companies will have you dive right in, many first days don’t involve a lot of tasks, so bring an agenda and pen to keep busy taking notes and penciling in important dates. As long as you meet any task or situation that comes at you with an upbeat attitude, you’ll be golden.
