A new year means new vows to break old habits. It means beginning new routines and putting old resolutions to rest. If you’re making a pledge to health and wellness this year, you’ll need a few tools of the trade to stick to your word.
Running: Perhaps the most popular and most dreaded exercise adults will take up in 2017. The good news? All you need for this one is a good pair of shoes and a little advice. We’ve got the latter covered. With more than 45 road races under her feet and 25 years of lacing up her Mizunos, Jenn talks training, fueling and favorite tips for the resolution runner.

HOW DO YOU PACK YOUR GYM BAG?
I use the Preppy Poly Travel Bag to hold all of my running necessities, especially when I travel for out-of-town races. I like setting everything out and packing it separately from my other clothes to make sure I’m not missing anything. There’s nothing worse than getting to a race only to find you are missing something.
WHAT ARE THE ITEMS YOU CAN’T LEAVE HOME WITHOUT?
My Mizuno shoes, my race fuel, running watch, my Three Rivers Running Company community team shirt, hair ties and my lucky race charms — race earrings, nail polish and sunglasses.

RUNNING: INSIDE OR OUTSIDE?
Definitely outside! Anytime of the year.
COLD-WEATHER RUNNING TIPS:
Cold-weather running is great if you know how to dress. It takes a little practice. Try to dress in what you would wear if it was 20 degrees warmer than the current temperature outside. That’s about how much your body warms up when running. Everyone has a different tolerance to cold, so wear what works for you. But definitely bring gloves (I prefer mittens) and a head warmer to cover your ears so they don’t get cold.
REMINDER:
“Running is not just about getting in shape. It transforms people’s lives because of setting goals and accomplishing those goals with the mental and physical challenges it takes to complete a race.”
