Vera Bradley Coupon Code: FIRST DAY OF WORK: 5 THINGS TO REMEMBER
You did it. You graduated, nailed the interview and landed your first real job. It’s been a long road to get to this point, but you’re so thrilled to begin this new chapter in your life. As exciting as starting a new job can be, it also tends to be a pretty nerve-racking experience. The night before, you’ll have a million thoughts running through your head. “I hope they like me.” “What if I embarrass myself?” “Will I make any friends?” “What should I wear?”
First, we can tell you from experience that it’s going to be okay. The jitters will subside once you start your day. Until you start your new journey, here are five things to remember for your first day of work.
|  Timing is everything
This spans beyond the typical “don’t be late.” You want to arrive on your first day early, but not too early. We recommend arriving seven minutes early. See why seven is the sweet spot here. If you’re new to the area, you should practice your commute prior to your first day. Get a feel for how long it will take with and without traffic and plan accordingly. It’s also important to get an understanding of work hours. Is it a typical 9 – 5, or is it more flexible as long as you get your 40 hours in? We recommend not being the first one to jet out of the office on your first day. Leaving too early can make just as bad of an impression as arriving too late.
|  Prepare your “elevator pitch”
Elevator pitches are not just for job fairs and interviews. It’s important to have a 20 – 30 second intro about yourself, past experience and new role for that first week. You will be shown around and meet a lot of new people. You want to make a solid first impression on your new coworkers with a confident and upbeat introduction.
|  Ask questions
First days can be daunting with the sheer amount of information you’re taking in — but don’t forget to ask questions! Don’t worry about asking too many questions or “stupid” questions. In fact, for the first week, you have somewhat of a “hall pass.” Your boss and coworkers know you’re learning and adjusting, so just be eager and take a lot of notes. It’s good to take those first few days or weeks to just absorb information so you can hit the ground running.
|  Yes is the right answer
On your first day, you’re not really in a position to turn something down, whether it’s a task or an invitation to a social gathering. Show that you’re willing to try by accepting any project with a smile. If your coworkers invite you to lunch, gladly accept. You will be working with these people every day, so it’s good to get to know them and integrate yourself into the group as early on as possible. In the beginning especially, it’s crucial to have that can-do attitude.
|  Relax
We know, easier said than done. You nailed the interview, remember? They want you there, and more importantly, they want you to succeed. Know that everyone has had a first day before, so they know what it’s like. The best part is that you only have that first day once! Get a good night’s sleep, put on that killer outfit (we know you have it picked out), and remember to breathe. You’re going to be great!
